In 1967, the garden of Medicinal and Aromatic Herbs was established at the Slovenian Institute for Hop Research and Brewing in Žalec. Its main purpose was research, counselling and education.
People have always used herbs to improve their health. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Babylonians were all growing herbs. In the Middle Ages, Charlemagne (742-814) told his subjects to grow herbs at the royal estate as well as in the peasant gardens. Throughout human history, herbs were grown in different forms: in gardens in the Roman times, in monastery gardens, Renaissance gardens, royal gardens, in the 18th and 19th century gardens, and in home gardens, which continue to be the most popular and frequent form to this day.
The garden of medicinal and aromatic plants at the Slovenian Institute for Hop Research and Brewing in Žalec offers you an interesting insight into the cultivation of plants and their use.
