The Vrbje Pond

The Vrbje Pond

South of Žalec, close to the Savinja River, there is an interesting protected area, the central part of which is the Vrbje pond. It stretches over 13 hectares and is the largest stagnant water body in this part of the valley. The pond is a breeding ground for fresh water fish species Cypriniformes. The pond has diverse and interesting flora and fauna, especially birds, as over 170 species have been spotted here.

The trail along the pond is adorned with wood sculptures, and numerous activities take place there throughout the whole year, for children and older people alike: birthday celebrationsfor children, children’s craft workshops, bird watching, Nordic walking, and group runs.

Around the Vrbje pond there is an interesting, 3 km long Eco-Learning Trail, which can be enjoyed in all four seasons. There are also several other theme trails close to the pond – the  Hop Trail, the Trail along the Savinja River, as well as the Healthy Heart Walking Trail.

In the direct vicinity of the Vrbje pond, the Grebe info centre, which is open between April and October if the weather allows, features numerous children’s workshops and the Grebe party in September. Here, you can rent Nordic walking poles, or have a glass of juice or a cup of coffee while your kids enjoy the playground facilities.

You can also admire the open-air gallery with wood sculptures created by sculptor Vinko Kovačec.
